TMD Summer Schools

Istanbul Bilgi University has been organizing summer schools for college students since 1998. From 2005 on these summer schools are organized under the roof of the Turkish Mathematical Society (TMD).

Our summer schools are designed primarily for undergraduates in a mathematics department who finished succesfully their first year. But the level of the courses is high enough that graduate students attend also.

Courses, which are either in Turkish or in English, last an integer multiple of a week. Our weeks start on mondays and end on Sundays. The attendees should arrive to the village the day before the classes start, i.e. a sunday. A week day is declared holiday, a wednesday or a thursday in general, during which it is customary to go to the seaside.

Each lecture lasts from 1,5 to 2 hours. Each student selects lectures suitable to his/her interest and level. There are about 4-5 lectures a day. Some students may give seminars or even mini courses.

We organize concerts or other amusements some nights. But most of the nights the students study alone or in groups.

No diplome or any kind or certificate is distributed at the end of the summer school. Exams, if ever, are not official. No grades are given in any event. The only purpose of our summer schools is the mathematics per se and nothing else.

Every participant student accepts to give some of his or her time to the village. There are lots to do. Cooking, cleaning, watering, planting, washing, construction, administration etc.

The village is a free environment where everyone's lifestyle is respected, with the condition that this lifestyle does not disturb the others.
